Today, we are highlighting the beautifully expanded kitchen and the stunning veranda elements of this historic home renovation project.

Originally built in 1896 by the renowned architect George Post, the home was garnished with covered porches and balconies, a feature common in his work.

The first task of our renovation was to enhance the kitchen by adding a glass-roofed solarium immediately adjacent and open to the newly remodeled cooking space.

Seen in the first two photos, the new kitchen has an elegant archway leading to the sunroom, providing a seamless flow between the two areas, ideal for informal family gatherings and entertaining.

French doors in the sunroom open onto a stone terrace and pergola, which effortlessly extends to the covered veranda, as seen in photos 3 and 4, creating a superb indoor-outdoor living experience.

Appletrees | Historic Home Renovation, Bernardsville, NJ

Due to the size and scale of this WESKetch Architecture + Construction renovation project, it was undertaken in two phases.

The first element of Phase One was to expand the kitchen area by constructing a glass-roofed solarium, seen here.

The sunroom opens directly onto a stone terrace covered with a natural cedar trellis through three 8-foot-high timber French doors. These doors were constructed using the most advanced structural glazing to achieve the maximum glass area.

With the holiday season almost upon us, “Appletrees” offers perfect options for enjoying informal family gatherings and small-scale entertaining.

Historic Home Renovation in Bernardsville, NJ

Originally constructed in 1896 by the renowned architect George Post, this Neo-Classical estate had scarcely survived a hundred years of neglect before being heroically rescued and given a new lease on life by its new owners.

The WESKetch Architecture + Construction renovation project of “Appletrees” underwent two phases.

Seen here are photos of phase two, which included a stable-style carriage house designed to house six vehicles.

This component was carefully detailed to create the illusion and scale of a historic carriage house, with stable-style barn doors and antique market lighting.

The placement of this structure thoughtfully encloses a stone water tower and reflecting pool, featured in photos two and three.

Fall is a stunning time of year in New Jersey, and today we are enjoying the fall foliage and views at one of our recent projects located in picturesque Bernardsville.

Cider Barn was created as an accessory structure to a private residence, and was designed to blend seamlessly into the grade of the land and complement another existing barn.

The multi-level barn has a main level, upper loft, and full basement housing a workspace and family entertainment center.

[Custom Home Design]

Bridle Paths, a WESKetch Architecture + Construction custom design-build project nestled in Bernardsville, NJ, was originally completed in 2001.

The English Tudor-style home blends classic elegance with modern sophistication that, over 20 years later, has stood the test of time.

Design details:

• Inspired by the Ancient Greek concept of a "sun trap," the home boasts a unique architectural plan with intersecting axes and grids, ensuring most rooms enjoy natural light from three sides.

• The front of the home gracefully curves around a circular motor court, while the rear expands outward, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills.

• A roofed structure, known as a porte-cochère, extends from the entrance of the home over the adjacent driveway, sheltering those getting in or out of vehicles.

• Enter through a solid antique door into an open foyer. Directly opposite and adjacent to the main foyer is a large, raised stone terrace oriented perfectly towards the distant views of the mountain range.

• The north wing features a renovated carriage house transformed into garages, a billiard room, and guest quarters.

• Outside, the site design features expansive grounds, terraces, two outdoor fireplaces, and an in-ground pool.

[Architectural Styles] The International style emerged in Europe partly as a response to the cataclysm of World War I.

The style grew out of a fascination with buildings for a modern, industrialized age, which demanded utilitarian designs that included ample natural lighting and flexible interior spaces with minimal ornamentation of structure.

The International style, in part, represented industrial and social progress. In the face of opposition from totalitarian regimes in the 1930s, the movement resettled in the United States, where it flourished following economic expansion after World War II.

In the 1960s, many architects began to seek new design directions that reflected an increasingly diverse, commercialized, and post-industrial society.

A thorough understanding of the site, combined with the owner’s desire for a traditionally styled American farmhouse, resulted in this unique custom home design.

With picturesque lower ponds to the north and abundant natural light streaming in from the south, the challenge was to balance light and views.

The innovative solution was to provide viewing windows toward the north and allow light to enter the spaces from higher south-facing windows.

[Architectural Styles]

The Prairie style evolved from the meticulous design and construction practices prevalent during the earliest years of the 20th century.

Its original form remained popular only until about 1920, after which it largely faded from the architectural scene. However, many of its elements were resurrected during the 1930s.

Though Frank Lloyd Wright is the most famous architect associated with the Prairie style, this American architecture was developed by a variety of architects, not just Wright.

Among our passions are designing and building bespoke boathouses. Shown here is a new boathouse project currently on the boards.

The Upstate Lake design features a breathtaking front elevation as seen in the first panel, and a detailed side elevation in the second. The lower level includes a single boat slip and a spacious sun deck at the water’s edge.
